President Donald Trump is expected to join an unusual, last-minute gathering of the nation’s top military leaders this Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Marine Corps Base Quantico in northern Virginia,
according to multiple reports.
The meeting itself has raised eyebrows. Normally, an event bringing together hundreds of senior officers—everyone at the rank of brigadier general and above—would be planned months in advance. Instead, commanders from around the world are scrambling to clear their schedules for what looks to be a one-hour session.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called for the meeting but hasn’t explained the reason behind it. That silence, along with the president’s participation, has fueled speculation. Both the White House and the Pentagon declined to comment when asked by USA TODAY.
Roughly 800 senior officers are expected to attend. Reuters reports that Hegseth will likely stress the importance of maintaining a strong “warrior ethos” within the military, though other topics could come up as well.
For now, the meeting remains shrouded in mystery—an unusual situation for a gathering of this scale and importance. Photo by Staff Sgt. Ezekiel Kitandwe, Wikimedia commons.
