Thursday marks “Spirit Day,” during which people around the country are wearing the color purple to show their support for LGBT youth. Bullying and harassment, both online and in real life, continue to plague the country’s young people. Spirit Day is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with them and call for a more inclusive culture for all.

This is ThinkProgress’s fourth year partnering with GLAAD to support LGBT youth, and this year, we joined our colleagues from the Center for American Progress LGBT team and Center for American Progress Action Fund to show our spirit in full force. We are joined by millions of fellow participants across the country, including celebrities, corporations, public officials, faith leaders, and of course, students and educators, who recognize that our schools are not yet the safe places they should be for LGBT young people.

Spirit Day began in 2010 after several high-profile suicide deaths by gay teens who had experienced bullying in their schools. Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan originated the idea, choosing purple because it symbolizes “spirit” on the Pride Flag. GLAAD now spearheads the observance, creating a nationwide flood of purple across schools, workplaces, and of course, social media. By continuing to raise awareness in our communities about the consequences of bullying, we can educate away the fear that prevents LGBT young people from achieving their best.
